We earlier reported that Vimal Sumbly, ex-managing director of Triumph Motorcycles India, is likely to join Royal Enfield soon. Now, it has almost been confirmed that Sumbly has indeed joined the Chennai-based manufacturer, contrary to rumors suggesting him joining BMW Motorrad or Harley-Davidson. In his new role, Sumbly will be heading the company’s Asia Pacific division, which handles the company's Asia Pacific business operations.
Considering Royal Enfield’s bid to be a global player in the premium motorcycles’ space, Sumbly is the correct man to get on board. Having worked for Bajaj Auto in the past, and having set up Triumph Motorcycles’ India operations, Sumbly brings to the table his expertise in driving sales for the premium motorcycles. Sumbly played an instrumental role in establishing Triumph's popularity in India since 2013. Prior to Triumph, Sumbly was also responsible for helping Bajaj set up KTM probiking outlets across the city.
Coming to his new role in the company, he will be based out of Gurugram for initial few months, before moving to Thailand. Sumbly's appointment now makes him Royal Enfield’s third high-profile hiring after Sudhanshu Singh from Star Sports and Simon Warburton from Triumph UK. Truly a veteran of the industry, it'd be interesting to see how Sumbly scripts Royal Enfield’s growth story from here on.
